Pentangle's version off their "Reflection" recording. Check it out just for 6 degrees' sake - as many of you here already know, they opened for the dead on all of those Feb./March Fillmore '69 shows. Well worth a visit, if you've never heard them - or this version.

RBNW ... , up here in Frostbite Falls, we know your weather well . . . after listening to Vaughan Williams' "Symphonia Antarctica" and Henry Kaiser's "California Dreaming", you could listen to your favorite spring or summer tour show and tell yourself: "the snow can be wonderful for a while . . . and spring will come . . . spring will come . . . spring will come . . .

As for favorite/seasonal dead version, I wholeheartedly agree with strat on 4-29-71. Coming at the end of some mighty fine jamming, from "Alligator through "Rain and Snow". After decades of listening to this sequence, it continues to excite and delight! I have a couple of vivid 'seasonal' memories of this jam playing, while desperately trying to maneuver around on some pretty icy roads. After some wild, frenetic, spot on, playing by all -and the same goes for my driving - the "Rain and Snow" actually did a fine job of settling the nerves.

I wholeheartedly back up this choice. Jerr may be in the throes of severe Twinkie overload, but he manages to rip this up.

That was the tape that got me on the bus once and for all. Had been really enjoying the music on a slightly more casual level for a couple of years when a friend who was at this show popped the tape in during a particularly spirited game of giving the plastic pipe CPR. When Jerry whipped out those gut wrenching growls in MD, I was sucked in (peanut gallery: don't say I never gave you anything) on a deeply spiritual level and have yet to look back.

That show (the Clugston source I would later find out) was key in the beginning of my conversion. (As was 4-14-85 and Riverbend '85, which is why I probably have a soft spot for this era.) The whole second set is one song, as the epic ones tend to be. I Don't Need Love even works for the only time ever. The first set is very good as well, though I usually start at Cumberland. The whole show feels like a fever dream.

I went looking for Pentangle and stumbled across Del McCoury with the Chieftains doing the tune. At the Ryman. Pretty cool.

the Phil Bomb half way through this one is tremendous.

I really like the "bent" nature of this version. The solo is great, very synchopated, and you can hear the crowd digging it.

This is the only version that doesn't totally distort when Phil cuts loose.

8/11/1987? Was there as well.

Since I left with un-soiled shoes, I wasn't sure if you were in attendance.

No. We were married in Pruhonice. On the outdoor balcony/patio area overlooking the pond/lake. Then the party was in the town square/pub with music by Deep Sweden and Abraxas.

(Petr is playing (so to speak) my wife's guitar; I was their manager at the outset)

It was great traveling in a band with one guy and three gals as we headed into village after village each weekend. All the way down to Sarajevo and Banja Luka and other interesting spots at the time of the Dayton peace accord. Just don't take a Bosnian sound man into Serbia unless you won't some real trouble. Ever had a gun in your face because the club owner was a Serb and gave you a half hour to get rid of the Bosnian or he'd kill you? Rock n roll ...

Abraxas - doens't translate outside Bohemia...
The drummer, Ivan Pelisek, was (is) a great friend.

The wife is still trouble - but she's got the short end of this deal.

Her favorite band - and the ones I had most fun being with over time:

12-07-71 Felt Forum is one I like.

1985 may not be the best year in GD history, but the 3-29 Nassau show has a pretty good CR&S.

This one is slower tempo, and was part of the download series over at dead.net last year.
